Not only is it a picturesque place to live with ideal transport links to Cardiff city centre and the M4, North Cardiff is also an ideal location for dog owners with an array of dog friendly walking routes and trails nearby. From mountain treks to a walk in the park, we’ve whittled down the long list to a few firm favourites for your four-legged friends:The Taff Trail: The ultimate outing for your canine companion and just a tennis ball’s throw away from Radyr and north-west Cardiff. Access the trail from Radyr train station via the Blue Bridge which takes you over the river. You can choose different routes and paths and probably find something new each time! Head north to Tongwynlais or south to Hailey Park, and have a little break by the weir and let your dog have a cool down and splash around in the water.
Hailey Park: A nice open space along the Taff Trail to throw a ball around and mingle with fellow dog owners.
Forest Farm: For the more chilled out dogs who don’t mind a bit of wildlife, Forest Farm is a must. A gentle walk along the canal with designated on-lead areas, convenient parking and picnic benches for pitstops.
Fforest Fawr: Situated near Castell Coch, Fforest Fawr offers families, walkers, runners, cyclists and, of course, pooches the perfect place to explore and get their daily dose of exercise. The forest is made up of an abundance of waymarked woodland trails, beautiful scenery and has a dog friendly café along the way.
‘The Garth’: Garth Mountain, near Taff’s Well, has a range of routes for varying abilities and distances. So whether you fancy a quick morning run-around or a more strenuous walk so Fido can really burn off some energy, this offers the ideal location. The Gwaelod y Garth Inn welcomes well behaved dogs (on a lead) and provides fresh water on draught, and there’s even a jar of doggy treats at the bar!
Nant Fawr Meadows: A green corridor of scenic woodlands from North Cardiff to Cyncoed, taking in Llanishen Reservoir. The meadows are full of wild flowers and ‘ecological characteristics’ and is a dog walker’s sanctuary.
North Cardiff really is blessed with some outstanding areas for exploring with your dogs. Do let us know your ‘pet’ places to walk your dog; whether it’s somewhere new you’ve recently discovered, a hidden location off the beaten track, or a spot you return to, time and time again.
