The task of moving home can be completely overwhelming; however by following these top tips you can make the process much easier for you and your family.

After you have completed the purchase of your new home, the daunting task of packing all of your possessions and moving from your current location to the new will lay over you. Such a strenuous task can be completely overwhelming; however by following these top tips you can make the process much easier for you and your family.

  1. Organisation is key

As a general rule of thumb, do not leave anything until last minute unless necessary. The more time you allow yourself to pack, the more relaxed you will feel as there will be no rush to finish. Time will allow you to create an inventory of what you want to keep initially, and a list of items packed and where. It will allow you to prioritise certain tasks, and pack items securely rather than in a messy unsystematic order.

An inventory list will allow you to know if something is missing, as you can check off items when they arrive at your new home. Numbering or colour co-ordinating boxes with a felt tip or coloured duct tape for each room in the house will let you or a moving team know where to put them. Strategically packing items with heavy at the bottom and light on top will reduce damage to the items; and marking fragile boxes with ‘up’ will reduce potential breakage.

  1. Declutter

Packing up your old home provides you with the perfect opportunity to declutter unwanted junk. Why go through the effort of sorting and packing items that you do not want, then traipsing them into your brand-new home to continue to remain unused? Not only that, but moving costs money. Whether this be through petrol spent on you transporting your goods to the new home, or through a moving company charging for each load on their van. Whatever way you decide to move to your new house, more boxes equals more stress and an increase in cost. Allow yourself the real fresh start that you deserve by getting rid of all the things you don’t want.

  1. Change Your Address

There are a number of companies and people that you will need to inform about your new house and new address. This includes:

  • Bank
  • DVLA-care registration and driver’s license
  • Council tax
  • Insurance Companies
  • Post Office
  • Dentist & Doctor
  • Electricity, gas, and water
  • HMRC
  • Pensions
  • Telephone
  • Television licence
  1. Hire a moving company or move yourself

Deciding how you are going to move is a large aspect of the process. Not all moves require hiring an outside service, so it is important to keep this in mind when researching and selecting the right company for you. If the distance to your new property is short, you own a van, have time off work, or are willing to put in the hard effort of loading, driving and unloading…then perhaps moving yourself is the best solution. This said, there are a lot of other options when moving, so research and decide on the one most appropriate for you. Some people opt to hire a company to transport the heavy and bulky items then take the smaller lighter boxes themselves; and some people use transport companies to move all of the items to allow for a less stressful moving day. Transport companies offer different services from one another, so bear this in mind if you are choosing to use one.
